Flash Burns

A flash burn is a burn caused by sudden exposure to an explosion or intense heat, such as when gas suddenly ignites or electricity arcs between two pieces of equipment. With very little or no warning, the victim of a flash burn is exposed to heat as high as 30,000 degrees F. The result is severe burning of the skin with temporary intense pain and possible chronic, permanent pain; temporary or permanent loss of sight (arc eye or ultraviolet keratitis); scarring; and sometimes permanent loss of movement in the affected area. Because of the sudden and traumatic nature of flash burns, victims may also have psychological injuries such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Flash burns often happen in industrial or construction settings, where workers are likely to be exposed to volatile gases, exposed electricity or controlled flames. They can also happen to soldiers in combat, police officers or anyone else exposed to a sudden explosion. However, a flash burn can happen in any place where the conditions may cause a sudden explosion, including restaurants, bars and vehicles.

Because flash burns are nearly always accidents, they're often caused by negligence or bad decisions. If you believe you sustained a flash burn because of someone else's carelessness, you have the right to file a flash burn injury lawsuit in New Jersey. Under New Jersey law, you can claim damages for the cost of treating your injuries, including future surgeries or therapy; any other costs caused by the burn, such as lost wages from missed days of work; and compensation for severe pain, scarring and any disability. If the accident happened while you were on the job, you may be able to collect workers' compensation instead of or in addition to these damages.
